Chimpanzee Habituation and Tracking: Uganda being the Primate capital of the world, is one of the best places to encounter the chimpanzees (There are about 4950 chimpanzees within Uganda, Kibale Forest alone has the most with almost 1500 Chimpanzees (Kibale is also a home to about 13 primate species, several other animals and bird species). Chimpanzees can also be encountered in Budongo forests in Murchison Falls National park, Kyambura and Kalizu in Queen Elizabeth National park.

Chimpanzee habituation experience.

Chimpanzee habituationThis is a full day activity where clients set off in the morning with the rangers and researchers to encounter the chimpanzees and familiarizing them to humans. Clients depart from the lodge with their packed lunch for the full day activity taking as many pictures as possible, studying the chimpanzee behaviors and many more. A lot of other animals and bird species may also be spotted during the full day activity. Your day will be full, your camera will fill up with quality pictures of the chimpanzees and you will get to learn to identify them as individuals by their markings, sometimes scars and other unique features that make them stand apart from rest. The day ends as the chimpanzees climb into their newly built nests for the evening and you head back to your lodging for the evening.

The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience which entails getting the chimpanzees used to the presence of humans (to remove the fear of humans from the group), takes up to about two years. Normally a maximum of about 04 clients are allowed to habituate a Chimpanzee family.


When is the best time to go for the Chimpanzee habituation experience?

In Uganda, the chimpanzee habituation experience can be done all year round. However, the best months are March, April, May and November, when there is less tourist congestion. In a small group of about 04 clients with a ranger guide, you will be allocated a chimpanzee family to track for the whole day.

Chimpanzee tracking experience.

Unlike the chimpanzee habituation experience, the chimpanzee tracking experience is a half day experience where clients are taken for an encounter with the already habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Here clients set off in the morning with their packed lunch ready to meet man’s closest relative the chimpanzees. In the park headquarters, clients will be allocated game rangers and chimpanzee family to visit, thereafter enter the forest to meet these apes as they wake up from their nests for the day activity. Clients will spend time with the chimpanzees at a loser range taking as many pictures as possible.

During the chimpanzee tracking experience, you will pass through the forest trails with so many chances of meeting many different bird species, butterflies, several mammals that inhabit the incredible forests. This will make your safari a more rewarding one.


For both Chimpanzee tracking and habituation experience, clients need to book the permits in advance to avoid disappointments. Limited permits are issued on first come first serve basis for both experiences, permits are issued at the Uganda Wildlife Authority head offices.
